چکیده

High-resolution (R ≈ 100 000), high signal-to-noise spectra of M71 giants have been obtained with HIRES at the Keck I Telescope in order to measure their Mg isotopic ratios, as well as elemental abundances of C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Ni, Zr and La. We demonstrate that M71 has two populations, the first having weak CN, normal O, Na, Mg, and Al, and a low ratio of Mg/Mg (∼4%) consistent with models of galactic chemical evolution with no contribution from AGB stars. The Galactic halo could have been formed from the dissolution of globular clusters prior to their intermediate mass stars reaching the AGB. The second population has enhanced Na and Al accompanied by lower O and by higher Mg/Mg (∼8%), consistent with models which do incorporate ejecta from AGB stars via normal stellar winds. All the M71 giants have identical [Fe/H], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], [Ti/Fe] and [Ni/Fe] to within σ = 0.04 dex (10%). We therefore infer that the timescale for formation of the first generation of stars we see today in this globular cluster must be sufficiently short to avoid a contribution from AGB stars, i.e. less than ∼0.3 Gyr. Furthermore, the Mg isotopic ratios in the second M71 population, combined with their elemental abundances for the light elements, demonstrate that the difference must be the result of adding in the ejecta of intermediate mass AGB stars. Finally we suggest that the low amplitude of the abundance variations of the light elements within M71 is due to a combination of its low mass and its relatively high Fe-metallicity. Magnesium Isotopes in Halo Stars

We have determined Mg isotope ratios in halo field dwarfs and giants in the globular cluster M71 based on high S/N high spectral resolution {R= 10^) Keck HIRES spectra. Unlike previous claims of an important contribution from intermediate-mass AGB stars to the Galactic halo, we find that our ^^Mg/^^Mg ratios can be explained by massive stars.

Magnesium Isotopes in Metal-Poor Dwarfs, the Rise of AGB Stars and the Formation Timescale of the Galactic Halo

We have determined magnesium isotopic ratios (Mg/Mg) in metal-poor (−2.6 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ −1.3) halo dwarfs employing high S/N (90-280) high spectral resolution (R = 10) Keck HIRES spectra. Unlike previous claims of an important contribution from intermediate-mass AGB stars at low metallicities, we find that the rise of the AGB contribution in the Galactic halo did not occur until intermediate metall...

Globular cluster abundances and what they can tell us about galaxy formation

We review the properties of globular clusters which make them useful for studying the Galactic halo, Galactic chemical evolution, and the early stages of the formation of the Milky Way. We review the evidence that GCs have a chemical inventory similar to those of halo field stars. We discuss the abundance ratios for dSph galaxies and show that it is possible to have formed at least part the Gal...

Carbon abundances and 12 C / 13 C from globular cluster giants

The behaviour of the ∆ν=2 CO bands around 2.3 μm was examined by comparing observed and synthetic spectra in stars in globular clusters of different metallicity. Changes in the C/C isotopic ratio and the carbon abundances were investigated in stars from 3500–4900 K in the galactic globular clusters M71, M5, M3 and M13, covering the metallicity range from –0.7 to –1.6. We found relatively low ca...

Magnesium isotopic abundance ratios in cool stars

From high resolution spectra of 61 cool dwarfs and giants, Mg isotopic abundance ratios Mg:Mg:Mg are derived from spectral synthesis of the MgH A-X lines near 5140Å. Our sample spans the range −2.5 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0.1, including the first measurements of Mg isotope ratios in stars with metallicities below [Fe/H]=−2.0. We confirm the decrease in Mg/Mg with decreasing [Fe/H] as predicted by recent mod...
